The importance of flossing

Updated: Jul 9, 2021

A new study has shown that flossing can help prevent cognitive decline and dementia. Flossing is very important in maintaining gum health and preventing gum disease. When gum disease gets worse, it can lead to the loss of teeth. And what the study found was that when adults lost teeth, they had a 1.48 times higher risk of cognitive impairment and a 1.28 times higher risk of getting dementia.

This is the case because when adults are missing teeth, they are unable to eat some kinds of foods, which limits the types of nutritious foods they can eat. When you are not getting those nutrients to the brain, that can increase the risk of cognitive decline. The study also found links between oral inflammation and brain inflammation. P. gingivalis causes gum disease, and it has also been linked to Alzheimer's.

So flossing your teeth is important for more than just oral health! Make sure to keep flossing every day as part of your daily routine.
